If you accept debit or credit card payments, either through a Chip and PIN terminal, over the telephone or online, then you must adhere to the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI) security measures.
Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards
This data security is a set of standards as guided by the PCI Security Standards Council and they provide mandatory security guidelines that assist merchants in preventing credit card fraud and identity theft all over the world.
Any company that processes, stores or transmits credit card numbers are required to comply with the PCI DSS standard but please do not be alarmed by PCI compliance. This was introduced in 2006 to protect both the merchant, consumer and banks and is a great way to help all involved to ensure that payments are handled and processed in the right way. The Standard can be found on the PCI SSC's Website.
